The SwissENERGYSCOPE is a national information portal on energy transition. Mid-April 2015, EPFL’s Energy Center has released an information portal that presents the challenges of the energy transition and provides key elements to make such an informed choice. The SCCER BIOSWEET is proud of having contributed to this great platform! The SwissENERGYSCOPE, in collaboration with SuisseEnergie, the Canton of Vaud and the city of Lausanne is composed of four tools: A national energy calculator that shows the status of our current consumption and what it could be in 2035 and 2050, based on multiple parameters to play with; 100 answers to 100 questions that can be asked about the energy transition in Switzerland. Available online and as an electronic book; An online course for all, open for everyone who wishes to understand the energy challenges of today and tomorrow and a pocket book, released in October 2015, edited by the Presses Polythechniques et Universitaires Romandes.

Currently, the SCCER BIOSWEET Team around François Maréchal (EPFL), develops techno-economic and environmental scenarios for the integration of the bioenergy production processes into the Swiss-Energyscope. In order to do so, a computer aided process synthesis platform has been developed. The platform allows for the detailed analysis of biomass conversion process development. The platform has been developed and validated on several cases ranging from the conversion of biomass into gas and liquid fuels, electricity production and bioproducts (biorefineries). The platform has the following characteristics: thermodynamic models for energy and mass flow analysis, integration of process models, energy integration (heat and power), multi-period approach for intermittent sources and demands, equipment sizing and cost estimation, LCA indicators. The platform works with super structures and multi objective optimization techniques that allows to compare both thermo-chemical and biochemical options. Recent developments realized in the SCCER BIOSWEET concern the large scale integration of biomass conversion units in the perspective of their integration in industrial processes or urban systems. The new method allows studying the synergies and competition with other renewable energy sources. The assessment methodology includes uncertainty on parameters (energy cost, equipment) and allows generating robust solutions.
