Welcome to the SCCER BIOSWEET

The Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research - Biomass for Swiss Energy Future (SCCER BIOSWEET) is a consortia of 15 Partners from 9 Academic Institutions and more than 50 Cooperation Partners from private or public sector organizations. It focuses on the engineering and implementation of biochemical and thermochemical biomass conversion processes with a high level of technological readiness and sustainability.

BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2015

The 65th edition of the BP Statistical Review of World Energy sets out energy data for 2015. A few numbers on renewables: renewable energy in power generation continued to increase in 2015, reaching 2.8% of global energy consumption, up from 0.8% a decade ago. Globally, wind energy remains the largest source of renewable electricity (52.2% of renewable generation). Solar power generation grew by 32.6% with China overtaking both Germany and the US to become the world’s leading generator of solar energy. Global biofuels production grew by 0.9%, well below the 10-year average of 14.3%.

Reconciling food security and bioenergy

The UN Sustainable Development Goals place a high priority on food and energy security. In June 2016, the report “Reconciling food security and bioenergy: priorities for action”, was published by the International Food Policy Research Institute together with the World Bank, the Delft University and the Centre for Environmental Policy of the Imperial College London. The paper argues that bioenergy plays an important role in achieving both goals, and lays out priorities for achieving synergies between bioenergy and food security.

Following a two-stage evaluation procedure, CTI has eleven NTNs its funding programme including three new NTNs.

Bioenergie-Forum 2016

The 4th Bioenergy Forum highlighted the regional, renewable and climate-neutral potential of bioenergy in Switzerland. However, the potentials are constraint by bureaucratic hurdles and the lack of incentives, agreed the over 100 experts. The Bioenergy-Forum was organized by Biomass Suisse and in partnership with the SCCER BIOSWEET.

Blue Diversion Autarky - Sauberes Wasser aus der Toilette. In den Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern liegt der sanitäre Standard häufig unterhalb des von der WHO festgelegten Mindeststandards. Dies führt zu starken Problemen im Bereich der Gesundheit und der Umwelt (z.B. verunreinigtes Trinkwasser, hohe Kindersterblichkeit, Verbreitung von Krankheitserregern). Die Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation startete daher im Jahr 2011 einen weltweiten Wettbewerb zur Entwicklung neuer dezentraler Sanitärkonzepte für solche Länder. Die Eawag hat, in Zusammenarbeit mit weiteren Forschungsinstituten, innerhalb dieses Wettbewerbs die „Blue Diversion Toilet“ entwickelt. Ein Merkmal dieser Toilette ist die Trennung von Urin und Fäkalien. Diese Toilette wird nun im Projekt „Blue Diversion Autarky“ um ein Modul zur autothermen, hydrothermalen Oxidation (HTO) von Fäkalien erweitert, welches an der FHNW am Institut für Biomasse und Ressourceneffizienz zusammen mit dem PSI entwickelt wird. Für die Verfahrensentwicklung wurde ein erster Labor-Prototyp konzeptioniert und aufgebaut. Im Vortrag wird die Idee hinter der Blue Diversion Toilette erläutert sowie das Design und die aktuellen Ergebnisse des autarken Moduls für die Behandlung des Fäkalschlamms gezeigt.
